How to Send an Encrypted Email in Gmail on iPhone or iPad

This wikiHow teaches you how to set up your iPhone or iPad to encrypt outgoing email in the Gmail app. You’ll need to have the recipient’s S/MIME certificate or public key installed for encryption to work.

Steps

Open your iPhone or iPad’s Settings
. You’ll usually find this app on the home screen.

Scroll down and tap Accounts & Passwords.

Tap Gmail. It’s under the “ACCOUNTS” heading.

Tap your account. It’s under the “GMAIL” header at the top of the screen.

Tap Advanced. It’s at the bottom of the screen.

Scroll down and slide the “S/MIME” switch to
On. Two more options will appear below.

Tap Sign. It’s below the switch you just turned on.

- If your name appears more than once under the “CERTIFICATES” header, select the certificate with the most distant expiration date.

Tap the back button until you’ve returned to the Advanced menu.

Tap Encrypt by Default. It’s below the “S/MIME” header.

Slide the “Encrypt by Default” switch to
On. Now that you’ve made these changes, you can use the Gmail app to send encrypted messages from your iPhone or iPad.
