Method 1
-
1Open Safari on your Mac. It’s the blue, red, and white compass icon typically found on the Dock.
-
2Navigate to a website that contains articles you want to read. For example, to access wikiHow, type https://www.wikihow.com into the address bar and press ⏎ Return.
-
3Click the article you want to read. Most websites' main pages cannot be viewed in Reader mode, but their linked articles can.
-
4Press ⇧ Shift+⌘ Command+R. This opens the article in an easy-to-read text format.[1]
- You can also enter Reader mode by clicking the View menu and selecting Show Reader.
- To customize the fonts and colors in Reading mode, click the aA icon at the address bar's far-right edge.
- To exit the Reader, click the icon with 4 horizontal lines (the last line is the shortest) at the address bar's far-left edge.
Method 2
Method 2 of 2:Setting Reader Mode for a Website
Method 2
-
1Open Safari on your Mac. It’s the blue, red, and white compass icon typically found on the Dock.
- Use this method if you want to set up a certain website to automatically open its articles in Reader mode.
- This feature is new with Safari 11 (for High Sierra). You will not be able to use this method with Safari 10 or earlier.[2]
-
2Navigate to the site you want to visit. For example, to access wikiHow, type https://www.wikihow.com into the address bar and press ⏎ Return.
-
3Click the Safari menu. It’s in the bar at the top of the screen.
-
4Click Settings for This Website. A pop-up will appear.
-
5Check the box next to “Use Reader when available.”
-
6Click anywhere on the screen to close the pop-up. Now each article on the selected site should open in Reader mode, displaying the text without unnecessary distractions.
- Not all sites support Reader mode. For example, you usually can't view a news site’s main page in Reader mode, though it usually works for individual articles.
- To manage the sites that use Reader mode, click the Safari menu and select Preferences. Disable Reader mode for any site by selecting Off from its corresponding drop-down menu.
