Disabling Chat on Facebook

Open the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad. The Facebook app looks like a white "f" in a blue square icon on your home screen, or in a folder.

Tap the three horizontal lines icon. This button is located in the lower-right corner of your screen. It will open your navigation menu on a new page.

Scroll down and tap Settings. This option is located towards the bottom of the menu. Your options will pop up from the bottom of your screen.

Tap Account Settings on the pop-up menu. This will open your Settings menu on a new page.
- On some versions of the Facebook app, you will see a Chat Settings option on the pop-up menu here. In this case, select this option.

Scroll down and tap Chat Settings on the Settings menu. This option is listed next to a gray speech bubble icon.

Slide the Chat switch to
. Turning off this switch will disable mobile chat on your iPhone or iPad. You will appear offline to all of your friends on Messenger.

Disabling Chat on Messenger

Open the Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad. The Messenger icon looks like a blue speech bubble with a white thunderbolt in it.
- If you already have Facebook open, tap the Messenger icon in the upper-right corner of your News Feed. It will switch you to the Messenger app.

Tap the People icon at the bottom of your screen. This button looks like a list icon in the lower-left corner. It will open a list of your friends.

Tap the Active tab at the top of your screen. It's located below the Search bar. This tab will show you a list of all your friends who are online at the moment.

Slide the green switch next to your name to
. Your name is listed at the top of your Active tab. Turning off this switch will disable mobile chat. You will appear offline to all of your friends on Messenger.
