Ingredients
- ¾ cup yellow cornmeal
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tablespoons honey
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- 12 hot dogs
- 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying, and 2 extra teaspoons
Steps
-
1Preheat the oil. Pour the 2 US quarts (2,000 ml) of vegetable oil in a pot. Have it preheat to 350 °F (177 °C). The vegetable oil should bubble a bit and will be extremely hot. Use a cooking thermometer to check the temperature of the oil.
-
2Mix the dry ingredients. Combine the all-purpose flour, yellow cornmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a large mixing bowl. Use a whisk or spoon to mix the dry ingredients properly.
-
3Add the wet ingredients. Pour the beaten egg, honey, buttermilk, and two teaspoons of vegetable oil into the dry ingredients. Mix the until the batter is gooey and a bright yellow color. Pour it in a large drinking glass and have it sit for 10 minutes.
-
4Prepare your hot dogs. Wipe the hot dogs with a napkin to remove any excess dirt and water. Poke skewers through the bottom of hot dogs. Lay each hot dog on a plate to prepare to frying.
-
5Dip the hot dogs into the batter. Dip the hot dogs into the corn dog batter and roll it around so each part is covered with batter.
-
6Fry the corn dogs. Drop the corn dog into the hot oil and have it fry until crispy on all sides. It will usually take about two to three minutes. Ensure that the inside is also cooked properly, or it will be gooey and raw. Use tongs to remove the corn dog. Repeat until there is no more batter.
-
7Serve. Lay your corn dogs under a napkin to avoid a mess from the excess oil. Serve the corn dogs with honey mustard or ketchup.
-
8Enjoy your meal!
