While there are benefits to being notified of some new text (or iOS) messages on your iPhone or iPad, there may be some that you'd rather not get notifications for. This article will help you stop receiving notifications for these streams and clear away the clutter.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:
Hiding Single Stream Thread Notifications

  1. 1
Open Apple Messages - if you haven't done so already. Apple Messages is green and has a white quote-cloud on it.
  2. 2
Think about what message threads you you want to hide notifications for. This will depend on your preference to receive messages from certain users or all message streams.

  3. 3
Find the thread stream you'd like to hide notifications from and tap it.
  4. 4
Tap the image of the sender at the top center of the screen. Different options will show such as audio, Facetime, and info.
  5. 5
Tap the "info" button once the sub-options buttons have popped open. Info is found to the right of FaceTime and there's nothing to the right of Info.
  6. 6
Locate the toggle switch for "Hide Alerts".
  7. 7
Tap the toggle switch if it isn't green. When it becomes green, it's turned on and you shouldn't get push notifications for this thread. You may find it between the "Share My Location" button and the Photos area (if available).
  8. 8
Back out of the menu. Tap the Done button from the top right corner.

Method 2 of 2:
Going Further: Hiding All Threads from Apple Messages

  1. 1
Open your Settings app from your iPhone. The app is grey and has a grey gear on the front of it.
  2. 2
Locate the "Notifications" option. You'll find this wedged between "Phone" and "FaceTime."
  3. 3
Locate the "Messages" option. Although this will depend on your specific apps on your device, the list is alphabetized and you'll be needing to look for this entry.
  4. 4
Tap the switch to the right of "Allow Notifications" if it's green.
    • Turning off all message notifications means you will not receive any notifications, so be aware that you may miss seeing new messages. You may instead choose to turn it off from time-to-time. All the rest of the options will vanish from the Settings and you can back out - but remember to come back later and turn it back on if you only want to turn off all message notifications temporarily.

Warnings

  • Doing this will not stop texts from unknown senders. Texts from these streams will continue to fall into their appropriate stream, but if you turn off notifications, you will not get notified of their messages.
