Flies can be a pest around the house. If you have a budgie, teach it to catch flies!
Steps
-
1Start training. Try a bead on a string. Sunflower seeds work well too. Just wave the bead/food around your budgie and they will try to catch it. When they do, give it a treat.
-
2Practice. Don't expect the bird to catch a fly right away! Just try using food or the bead!
-
3Introduce the fly. When your budgie starts getting good, get a dead fly. Don't give them a big one, give them one they can eat. A house fly would be ideal. .
-
4Set them on a live fly. If their wings aren't clipped, that is a good thing as they will chase it around. If they have been clipped, they will just walk around chasing it.
-
5Reward your budgie. When they made a catch, give them a treat. Seed works well, but they will eat the fly.
Community Q&A
-
QuestionWhy would someone need a bird to catch flies?
Community AnswerProbably just for fun. There are easier and quicker ways to catch flies, but some people might like the idea of training a bird to do it instead. -
QuestionI cannot take my budgie outside the cage, because I am afraid it might fly. Can I put a dead insect on its feeding place, so the bird can eat it automatically without taking out of the cage?
Community AnswerYou could do that. You can take out the budgie if you don't let it escape your eyesight. Don't leave any door or windows open. If you are pretty sure that it will fly, just make sure you can catch it. -
QuestionWhat can I do if my budgie is scared of everything?
Community AnswerThe best thing I do with my four budgies is to play and interact with them more and more to build their trust. -
QuestionSometimes flies carry disease. What if my budgie gets one with a sickness?
Community AnswerAsk your vet about insect-protecting medicine for your pet. If your budgie shows signs of sickness, take him/her to the vet. -
QuestionHow long does a parakeet live for?
Community AnswerThe average lifespan of a budgie (that is properly cared for) is 5-10 years. -
QuestionHow many flies should I let my budgie hunt per day?
Community AnswerAs many as the bird wants. They know when they are full. Don’t try to force feed them or force them to get the fly. -
QuestionCan budgies eat worms?
Community AnswerYes; this is something that would be in their diets in the wild. Try feeding your budgie one worm per week as supplemental protein. -
QuestionWhen I try taking my budgies out of the cage, they run around like crazy and refuse to go back and are always frightened even though I spend time taming them. What should I do?
Community AnswerJust keep trying and reward them when they come out without making trouble. Don't be too rough though. If this does not work, then train it to hop on and stand on your finger. -
QuestionCan budgies eat beetles?
Community AnswerNo, they can't eat cockroaches, spiders, maggots or beetles. They can eat ants, midges and flies. -
QuestionI have 4 budgies and they fight with each other. What should I do?
Community AnswerSeparate them and put the cages next to each other. Then, when they don’t fight in separate cages, put 1 in another cage, once they don’t fight, put 3 in a cage and so on until they all get along nicely.
Warnings
- Watch what your budgie eats. They shouldn't eat: Cockroaches, spiders, beetles or maggots. They can eat: Ants, Midges And Flies. Thanks!
- Don't let your budgie go in a sink to catch a fly. If they drove it in the water take it out for them, or if the waters shallow, let them go in (don't let them go in if there's dish soap in the sink. Same applies for giving them a fly if it went in the sink if it came out a sink with washing up liquid inside). Thanks!
