This wikiHow teaches you how to change the format of long names while using the Messages app. Note that there isn't a way to change your contacts' names to display solely last names in the Contacts app.

Steps

  1. 1
Open your iPhone's Settings. Do so by tapping the grey gear icon on one of your Home screens (it may be hiding in a folder entitled "Utilities").
  2. 2
Scroll to the fifth group of options and select Contacts.
  3. 3
Tap Short Name. It should be in the middle of the screen.
  4. 4
Make sure the Short Name switch is green. If it isn't, slide it right to the "On" position.
  5. 5
Select Last Name Only. Doing so will change the name that's displayed at the top of your Messages app when texting a contact from "First" to "Last".
    • For example, if you were texting your friend Jane Doe, the name at the top of your conversation would change from "Jane" to "Doe" after altering this setting.
