Learning German can be tricky, but the translation of the word “what” is pretty simple! We’ll teach it to you here.
- The German word for “what” is “was.”
- The German letter “w” is pronounced like the English letter “v” so “was” sounds like “vass.”
- For instance, you might ask, “Was ist das?” (What is that?) or “Was möchtest du?” (What do you want?/What would you like?)
- You can also use “was” in a statement, such as “Was für ein schlechter Film!” (What a bad movie!)
- You actually don’t use “what” in the phrase “What is your name?” You would say, "Wie heißt du?" which literally translates to, “How are you called?”
