There are many Mandarin Chinese vocabulary words that refer to females, so which should you use? Read on to learn the appropriate way to refer to a girl in various circumstances.
- The Mandarain word for “girl” is “gūniang” (姑娘).
- If you’re addressing a woman whose marital status you don’t know, say “nǚshì” (女士). This is similar to the English words “lady” or “Ms.”
- In contrast, only use the word for “miss”—“xiǎojiě” (小姐)—before a woman’s last name. The word by itself can be construed as “prostitute.”
- To refer to a girl as your girlfriend or lover, use the word “mi” (蜜). The literal translation is “honey.”
