  • The Mandarain word for “girl” is “gūniang” (姑娘).
  • If you’re addressing a woman whose marital status you don’t know, say “nǚshì” (女士). This is similar to the English words “lady” or “Ms.”
  • In contrast, only use the word for “miss”—“xiǎojiě” (小姐)—before a woman’s last name. The word by itself can be construed as “prostitute.”
