This article tells you about saving the Grand Star in Gateway Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy. Here's how it goes.
Steps

1Start a new file. Go through the introduction until you reach a grassy planet.
- If you need any help, please read "Play Super Mario Galaxy"!

2Follow the bunny. The Luma will turn into a star bunny and ask you to play with it. Follow it, and you'll encounter it along with two other bunnies.

3Play with the bunnies. The bunnies will ask you to play hide-and-seek with them.Locate their hiding areas, and chase them around until you've caught them.
- Take as much time as you need! Unlike the ones in the Hungry Luma Galaxies that involve chasing bunnies, there's no time limit here.

4Find Rosalina. A structure will appear. Go to the top of it, where you'll run into Rosalina once more. She'll give you the ability to spin.

5Use the spin ability to break the crystal. Once you've done so, a Launch Star will appear. Shake the Wii Remote to use the Launch Star.

6Collect the required star chips. You'll appear on a planet with falling meteors. Collect all 5 yellow star chips without falling in the hole to make a Launch Star appear.

7Take the Launch Star to the next area, where you'll find a trapped Luma. You have to defeat the Goombas, one of which has a key. Get the key to release the Luma from the trap, which will transform into a Sling Star.

8Take the Sling Star, and you'll be taken to an area with Goombas and electrified spikes. Defeat the large Goomba to get the key (find out more in the Supermassive Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2), which will free the Luma over a Warp Pipe.
- Do not ever, EVER jump on the large Goomba. You'll lose some of your health!

9Take the pipe to the area where the Grand Star is located. Turn all of the flipswitches from yellow to blue by running over them, which will free the Grand Star.

10Touch the Grand Star to complete the level.
