NVRAM is "nonvolatile random access memory" and it's used to store the settings for things like sound volume, display resolution, startup-disk selection, and time zone. If you're having issues with these or similar things, resetting the NVRAM can sometimes help. In older Macs, NVRAM was known as PRAM.
