With many movable parts, all engines are bound to overheat — it's a matter of simple concept called friction. That's where radiators come in, to ensure all that damaging heat is taken off the engine unit. But certain circumstances—like prolonged wear-and-tear, accidental damage, corrosion, or radiator coolant leak—might require the radiator of your Honda CR-V to be removed and replaced.

Steps

  1. 1
Ensure your Honda CR-V's ignition is in “Off” or “lock” mode. Then, reattach the negative cable of the battery. This is a very important step to begin with.
  2. 2
Remove the plug on the lower side of the radiator pan. Drain the liquid and collect it in a reseal-able container.
  3. 3
Remove the top and bottom radiator hoses as the next step. (Have a look at the hoses once for any wear-and-tear, and replace them if you must.)
  4. 4
Detach the fan motor and remove the top radiator brackets. Now carefully pull the radiator up and out, ensuring it doesn't scratch your CR-V's paint
  5. 5
Remove the fan covering and other parts attached to the radiator. Connect them to the new radiator.
  6. 6
Make sure the new radiator is seated securely on the pads. Rejoin the negative cable of the battery.
  7. 7
Pour in a mix of engine coolant and distilled water (in equal proportion) inside the new radiator.
  8. 8
Take the radiator cap off. Switch on the engine for a few minutes, to remove any air out of the system. Switch off the engine and fill the radiator to the brim with the coolant mixture.

Warnings

  • Wear protective clothing while handling the radiator to avoid any harm
  • Handle the coolant with care as it is poisonous. Dispose it off properly (in a garage or a hazardous waste facility) in case the coolant is no longer reusable.

Things You'll Need

  • Reseal-able container
  • Replacement radiator hoses, if needed
  • Replacement radiator
  • Engine coolant
  • Water
