Close to many of India’s top tourist spots and boasting gorgeous views of the countryside, Ooty is a popular destination for thousands of travellers every year. Fortunately, the hilltop town is easily accessible from the country’s major cities via plane, train, and bus.
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 3:Getting There By Plane
Method 2
Method 2 of 3:Taking the Train
-
1Go to the nearest train station that connects to Mettupalayam. Your choices include Mysore, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, and more.
-
2Choose which train you want to ride. There are 12 different trains that pass through Mettupalayam each day.[5] When looking for a train or buying your ticket, know that the code for the Mettupalayam Railway Station is MTP.
- There are different classes and tiers you can choose from when booking. The highest and most expensive (air-conditioned 1st class) includes private, locking compartments and meals. The lowest (2nd class) is just wooden benches where anyone can sit.[6]
-
3Ride the train to Mettupalayam. This is the closest major train station to Ooty, only 24.8 miles (39.9 km) away.[7] The length of your ride will depend on where you're coming from - a train ride from Coimbatore is less than an hour whereas a train ride from Udagamandai is 3.5 hours.[8]
- Trains in India don't announce each stop so pay attention to where you are and what time you're supposed to be arriving at your location so you don't miss your stop.
-
4Board the Ooty toy train which takes you all the way up the hill. After winding through the stunning Nilgiri Mountains, it will drop you off at Udhagamandalam Railway Station in Ooty. This portion of the trip takes 6 hours.[9]
Method 3
Method 3 of 3:Riding the Bus
-
1Decide whether you want a public or private bus. The public bus service is Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. Private companies include Padmesh Travels, Sam Tourist, Cauvery Travels, GreenLine Travels and Holidays, and more.[13]
- With private buses, you’ll have more luxuries offered to you including air conditioning, food stops every 4 to 6 hours, and places to sleep. They'll often play Bollywood movies on the trip, too.
-
2Choose your starting location and board the bus. The cheapest options will be from Bangalore or Chennai.[14] It’s 6 hours from Bangalore and 9 from Chennai. Fortunately, the roads that lead to Ooty are major highways so they are kept in decent shape, making for an easily trip, even if you tend to get carsick.
- Be prepared to stand if you're on a bus without assigned seats as they can get very crowded.
- Avoid a bumpy ride by sitting close to the front and never sitting over the wheel wells.[15]
- There is a government bus from Calicut that leaves every day at both 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. It’s a 6 hour trip to Ooty.[16]
-
3Take the bus to the Ooty Bus Stand. This is the primary bus stand in the city and has several busses passing through each day. Most leave at night between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. (or arrive in the morning) for overnight trips.[17]
- On sleeper buses, you'll have a bunk where you can roll out a sleeping bag. The bunk also has a curtain for privacy. Make sure you bring an alarm clock as bus drivers don't always wake you up at your destination.[18]
