Would you like to do the authentic hula... in a real hula skirt?

Steps

  1. 1
Collect/obtain Ti leaves or similar, wide, long leaves. You will need to divide your waist measurement by the width of the leaves and multiply by two.
    • Example: Waistline of 30 inches (76.2 cm). Leaves 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide. 30/2.5=12 12x2=24 You'll need at least 24 leaves.
  2. 2
Thread a length of heavy twine or strong string equal to twice your waist measurement plus 10 inches (25.4 cm) onto a large needle. The type used for needlepoint or carpets works fine.
  3. 3
Lay a leaf over a second piece of twine the length of your waist.
  4. 4
Fold the end of the leaf over the twine.
  5. 5
Stitch through the folded sections to sew the two layers of leaf together over the twine.
  6. 6
Lay another leaf overlapping the first, fold it over the twine, and stitch through it.
  7. 7
Continue to overlap, fold over the twine, and stitch until you have covered all the base twine.
  8. 8
Tie knots in the stitching twine. Leave the ends long for tying around your waist.
  9. 9
    Finished.
