A prairie oyster is both an old hangover "cure" that some swear by[1] and a respectable cocktail, depending on how you make it. Either way, this drink includes the use of a raw egg, so if consuming raw eggs freaks you out, bypass the egg or use a pasteurized one. The way in which the egg yolk is added to the glass without breaking it is thought to resemble an oyster, hence its name.
Ingredients
Basic recipe
- 1 raw egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 dashes of Tabasco sauce (or other hot sauce you like)
Vinegar and tomato prairie oyster
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato juice
- 2 dashes white wine vinegar
- 1 dash pepper sauce
- 1 raw egg yolk
Brandy prairie oyster
- 2 oz brandy
- 1/2 oz Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 oz red wine vinegar
- 1 dash Tabasco sauce
- 1 teaspoon tomato ketchup
- Cayenne pepper, to taste
- 1 raw egg yolk

Method 1
Method 1 of 3:Basic recipe
Method 1
-
1Crack the egg first. Tip the egg yolk into the glass without breaking it. (If you can manage that with a hangover, you're on the mend!)
-
2Pour in the teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and 2 dashes of Tabasco sauce.
-
3Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
4Drink it down in one go. If you're lucky, you'll chase away that hangover. Have some rest.

Method 3 of 3:Brandy prairie oyster (cocktail version)
Method 3
-
1Pour the brandy, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, red wine vinegar and tomato ketchup into a cocktail shaker. Shake briefly.
-
2Strain the liquid into the glass.
-
3Crack the egg. Float the unbroken egg yolk on top of the drink. Sprinkle with cayenne pepper.
-
4Swallow it all at once. This one may be enjoyed as a cocktail in its own right, no need for a hangover.
-
5Finished.
Things You'll Need
- Suitable glass
- Comfortable couch to while away the hangover
