The dancing button trick is easy to create from a few simple materials available in every household. It is a fun craft for kids to make on a rainy afternoon at home.
Steps
-
1Take a piece of thread or thin string about 60 centimeter (24 in) (2 feet) long and thread it through a button that has two eyes. (One end should go through each eye.)
-
2Tie a knot at the end of the string so that it forms a circle.
-
3Slide the button into the middle, giving you room to place your fingers on either side.
-
4Holding the string loosely, swing the button around in a circle to wind up the string.
-
5Pull outwards with your fingers and let the spinning button pull them in again. It may take you a while to get the rhythm, but soon you'll see the button dance and bounce for your entertainment. You may even hear a delightful hum as the button spins and dances.
Community Q&A
-
QuestionCan I use beads instead?
Community AnswerYes, you can. -
QuestionCan something other than string be used? Thread hurts.
T. ChinsenTop AnswererUse of cotton yarn or thread can be more comfortable. You will, however, need a much larger button for this to work. -
QuestionWhat is the cause of this toy not working as said - is it the length of the string?
T. ChinsenTop AnswererThe string is a factor if it is too thick or not in proportion to the button. Generally, the size and weight of the button generates the amount of spin. Too long a string on a small button will not work. Shortening the string so that it forms a wide "V" on either side usually makes it work. If it does not, then a larger button is needed. -
QuestionWhat forces make this toy work?
T. ChinsenTop AnswererCentripetal force generates stored energy that is released when the strings are pulled apart. When the hands come closer together, the continued spinning motion starts the cycle over again.
Warnings
- Don't hold the button up to someone's hair. This causes the hair to knot up with the string, and the button will have to be cut out. Thanks!
- Don't pull too hard, or the string will break. Thanks!
