How to Make a Clown Cake

With a mixture and assortment of different candies, this clown cake will bring smiles to the faces of the kids at a fun party. It's an ideal addition to a child's party featuring clowns, magic tricks and circus or performance themes.

Ingredients

1 large sponge cake
1 small sponge cake
Buttercream frosting
Blue food coloring
Flying saucers
Dolly mixtures
Chocolate buttons (giant)
Smarties candies (small chocolate buttons coated in candy)
Red sugar paste (or frosting)
Strawberry laces (e.g Twizzlers or stringy candy)
Marshmallows

Steps

Cut the small sponge cake into a triangular shape.

Curve the bottom into a small arch instead of a straight line. Use the two side pieces that you carved out from the original cake and cut a third piece off from the opposite ends of each piece. The curved triangle will become the complete hat and the small piece will be the hat rim

Frost the large sponge cake with the buttercream frosting. Use a smooth, palette knife to give it a solid stroke all around.

Mix the blue food coloring with the remaining frosting that you didn't use. Use the new blue frosting with the hat.

Place a few of the flying saucers down the center of the hat. Make the rim by lining it with some dolly mixtures.

Use two chocolate buttons as eyes for the clown. Put a dab of buttercream on two Smarties candies and stick it on the eyes for eyeballs.

Take a few Smarties (or similar candies) and form a "U" shape for the mouth.

Roll a chunk of red sugar paste into a ball. Make it quite large, as it should dominate the cake to give it the real "clown feel". Place this on the cake for the nose.

Arrange strawberry laces around the sides of the face for hair. Use white and pink marshmallows around the cake's bottom for the ruff (or collar).

Serve. Candles can be added around the face for a birthday cake.
