These pretty decorations are really simple, cheap, pretty, and easy to make! What's not to like about them?
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 2:Hand painting
Method 1
-
1Find the colors you want them to be. Remember, zinnias come in many colors like red, purple, pink, and orange, so get creative!
-
2Flip your pinecone upside down and paint the entire cone, you may want a bigger paintbrush for easier application.Advertisement
-
3Let this air dry for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the paint is completely dry.
-
4Take yellow puffy paint, or normal paint if you don't have that, and paint the middle of the zinnia with a small brush or if you are using puffy paint, just use the nozzle. The puffy paint is for texture, it is completely optional.
-
5Enjoy! Make a lot of them and put them in a basket for a pretty decoration, perfect for spring and summer. You can paint them orange, white, and blue with, sparkles for the winter and fall.Advertisement

Community Q&A

QuestionWhat kind of paint should I use?
Community AnswerYou'd want to use acrylic paint. If you can't find any, you can try using poster paint or tempera paint. Acrylic paint will work the best, however. -
QuestionWhat did you use to cut the bottoms off the pine cones?
Community AnswerI used a dremel. I put the cone on hard Styrofoam and cut at a slight angle slowly (slowly is the key). Once I got the hang of it I started shaping the “flowers” like a pro. -
QuestionWhere can I purchase the pine cones?
Community AnswerThere's no need to purchase them! If you have some trees surrounding your backyard, you can find them there. Or if you're hiking, you can pick up one or two. If you'd rather use fake pine cones, you can usually find them in craft stores like Michael's, etc. -
QuestionWhat does "normal paint" mean?
Community AnswerNormal paint refers to the type of paint you used before - just a different color. I recommend acrylic paint.
Warnings
- Don't let these guys get wet before they are painted. Do not let them sit in a hot and humid environment either, they decompose quickly and leave a foul stench. Thanks!
- Do not use water color, they get soggy and decompose quickly with a foul odor. Thanks!
