An old-fashioned treat for modern day "sweet-tooth". This is an original 1880s recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vinegar or 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp glycerin
  • 2 tsp flavoring of choice, e.g., vanilla, rose or lemon
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

Steps

  1. 1
Boil all the ingredients except for the flavoring and soda. Do not stir. Boil until crisp when a ball of the mixture is dropped in water.
  2. 2
    Add the soda.

Pour onto lined or greased cookie sheets to cool.
  4. 4
Pour the flavoring over the top.
  5. 5
    Allow mixture to cool.

Begin shaping. Once partly cool, pull the mixture until it becomes very white.
