Perfect for parties, movie nights-in and snack time, rainbow popcorn has appeal well beyond childhood years! It's fun to make and always brightens up a party table.
Ingredients
- 180g/6.3 oz popping kernels
- 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil (corn, sunflower, peanut, etc.)
- 180g/6.3 oz fine sugar
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1/2-1 teaspoon of four or so different liquid food colorings (four is the recommended amount, as it's easy to handle, reduces the amount of dishes used and it still looks like a rainbow theme)
Steps
Part 1
Part 1 of 4:Popping the Corn
-
1Add the oil to the large saucepan. Sprinkle the corn kernels over the base of the pan, in the oil. Put the lid on.

-
3Wait for the popping. Every now and then, give the pan a shake to help prevent burning. Shake more often when you hear popping noises.

Community Q&A
-
QuestionDoes the color come off the popcorn, and would it stain?
Community AnswerThe sugar syrup acts as a seal and keeps the colors intact. The coating hardens and if stored properly it will not run or stain. It's very important to incorporate the sugar syrup. -
QuestionCan you mix the popcorn with color before popping?
Community AnswerNo, because the color won't show up. If you want rainbow popcorn, add the color to it afterwards. -
QuestionDoes the sugar syrup have to be cold before putting it over the popcorn?
Community AnswerNo, it doesn't have to be cold. -
QuestionCan I make this recipe the night before it is due to be served?
Community AnswerIt's best to make it the day of serving, as it would turn stale overnight. -
QuestionCan I use honey instead of sugar syrup?
Community AnswerYes, you can. -
QuestionWill rainbow popcorn get soggy? Will it get stale if I put it in a container?
Community AnswerIt might become soft during storage. If you heat it up in the oven, say 100ºC, for 10 minutes, then it will crisp and serve much better the next day.

About This Article
To make rainbow popcorn, start by making several different colors of dye. To do this, dissolve sugar in boiling water and then pour the mixture into 4 or more small bowls, depending on how many colors you’ll use. Next, add a drop or two of the desired food coloring into each bowl. Finally, make some popcorn, divide it up into bowls for each of your colors, and mix the food coloring in before mixing them all back together.
