This article explains how to make rainbow inspired Body butter. A body butter is a cream texture that is excellent at hydrating and protecting the skin, especially during winter or if your skin is dry. The skin becomes softer and less prone to cracking or becoming inflamed when using a natural body butter. It can help minimize wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks. If you prefer not to buy products designed specifically to hydrate skin by experts in their field, you can put together multi colored stuff at home.
Steps
-
1Take 1 and 1/3 of Shea butter in your measuring cups and pack it in.
-
2Empty the measured Shea butter into a Pyrex glass cup to melt the butter.
-
3Place the Pyrex cup into a cooking cup so as to not to burn the butter in the melting process.
-
4Melt the butter on medium heat.
-
5Wait until the butter has melted completely, pour it out in a bowl.
-
6Let it cool for 15 minutes.
-
7Measure 1/2 cup of carrier/sweet almond or olive oil and pour it into the melted butter.
-
8Add 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil into the mixture.
- Optional: You can add Crushed oatmeal or corn starch.
- Optional to make it less greasy: 2 Tablespoon Corn Starch (grocery store), Tapioca Starch (grocery store), or finely milled Oatmeal which you may prefer because it soothes irritated and itchy skin like poison ivy/oak/sumac, rashes, insect bites, and eczema. It also soothes prickly heat, chicken pox, hives or sunburn.
-
9Mix it up!
- Optional again: Add 1-2 TSP of your favorite scented oil.
-
10Mix it up with a whisker or an electric whisk for 2 min.
-
11Wait till you see it solidifying a little. (partially solidifying)
-
12Wait until you see it solidifying a bit. Place it in the freezer for 10 to 20 min.
-
13Bring out the (almost) frozen mixture and whisk it again with the electric whisker until its whipped enough.
- You will know when it forms peaks on the whisker. When it does, it is whisked enough.
-
14Put the whipped mixture into a bowl.
-
15Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of your favorite rainbow colors i.e water soluble color or soap color. Ensure whatever coloring you choose your body butter won't stain your skin.
-
16Make sure you separate the mixtures into portions into different bowls if you want to have multicolored butter. Add the same amount i.e 1/2 or 1 TSP color to each slot and whisk it.
-
17Scoop and layer your butter the way you preference. If you want Yellow to be the up-most layer do so. If you wish, layer, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo then violet.
-
18Push down and layer.
-
19Wipe the sides of the container for clear layers.

QuestionDo I have to use water soluble dye? Can I just use gel coloring? In one video someone used gel.
Community AnswerUsing a water soluble dye is actually a terrible idea as body butters have no water in them. Notice that the dyes in the image above didn't actually spread evenly but ended up spots of color. So, in fact, using a gel or other oil-soluble dye is a better idea. -
QuestionWill this stain skin?
Community AnswerIt depends on the dye you use; if you use one that doesn't stain skin, then it won't. Check the label of your dye. If you're not sure, check the ingredients. If the dyes are FD&C Color #, then they won't stain, as those dyes are approved for food, drug and cosmetic uses. -
QuestionIs food coloring safe for my skin?
Community AnswerYes, it is. If you experience any irritation though, then stop using the body butter. -
QuestionWhere can I buy shea butter?
Community AnswerAmazon has refined and unrefined shea butter, as do many other websites. If you want something local, try local health stores or organic markets, as they frequently carry natural beauty products like shea butter.
Warnings
- The more you whisk, the more fluffy your body butter will be so keep mixing unless you prefer for the mixture to be dense. It's up to you if you want it stiff or softer peaks to determine it's doneThanks!
- You can try food coloring with caution BUT ONLY A FEW DROPS (TO AVOID STAINING YOUR SKIN. PLEASE SAMPLE TEST ON SKIN FIRST)Thanks!
