    Place a burning earthen lamp with castor oil in between two bowls and put a plate over it, as shown in the picture.

    Wait for about 20 minutes and lift up the plate. Be careful, as the plate will be very hot. Use a cloth or tong to pick it up. You will find soot is collected at the bottom of the plate.

    Scrape out the soot with a blunt knife or from the backside of a spoon. Take it out in a dry container and add a few drops of ghee (butter) in it. It will form a black paste, which is the kajal. You can store it in a steel box.
