Community Q&A
-
QuestionWhy do I need to use caster sugar?
Community AnswerCaster sugar will be easier to mix. If normal sugar is used and it is not mixed properly the cake might taste crunchy. -
QuestionHow do I make icing for cupcakes?
Community AnswerCupcake icing can be made with a dash of vanilla and powdered sugar in a bowl. Cream until the mixture is light and fluffy. If it is too thick, you can always add a 1/2 teaspoon or so of milk. -
QuestionDoes it matter if it's caster sugar or not?
Community AnswerYes, all types of sugar are different, so the type of sugar used is important. -
QuestionWhen can use brown sugar ? Does it add any flavour or colour to the cake?
Community AnswerBrown sugar means the cakes will be darker and will have a different flavour. To get typical, regular fairy cakes, use caster sugar. -
QuestionCan I make normal sugar finer by crushing it?
Community AnswerYes, if you can't find caster sugar, then you can make your own by putting regular granulated sugar in a clean, dry food processor or blender. Pulse the blender 4 or 5 times, and check the sugar. If it hasn't reached a very fine, almost powdery texture, continue pulsing your blender. Note: Do not substitute powdered (icing) sugar for caster sugar. Powdered sugar is mixed with corn starch, which can affect the texture of your finished cakes. -
QuestionWill normal flour work?
IsoldeTop AnswererIf by "normal" flour you mean all-purpose or plain flour, then it is possible but you'd need to add raising agents to the flour for it to work properly.
