1Learn how scarlet tanagers look in spring and summer. The male is bright scarlet with a black tail and wings, while the female is yellow-green, particularly near the throat, with pale green edges on the wings.[1]
- Immature (not fully developed) scarlet tanagers have a big resemblance to the females in spring and summer.
- You may see a small distinctive fleck of yellow on a male scarlet tanager's wings.

2Look out for paler colored scarlet tanagers in winter. The female turns a pale green and the male has a paler scarlet-colored body.[2]
- On females, look out for paler wing bars, particularly the green edges of the wings. They will appear almost pale yellow.
- Scarlet tanagers will maintain their black wings and tail, although they might appear a little browner in poor light.

3Look for a 16-19 cm long bird. They are very small, in between the size of a sparrow and a robin.[3]
