Interested in finding what the future holds for you? You may be thinking about getting your palm read! Palmistry (or chiromancy) is the art of predicting a person’s future and analyzing their past/present based on the lines, shape, and signs embedded in your hands. The good news is that you can get some good insight and advice from a palm reader (or palmist) without breaking the bank, and there are even free options out there you can explore if you prefer. If this is your first time getting your palm read, consider keeping it cheap just so you can get a sense for what you’re getting yourself into.
Steps
Question 1
Question 1 of 9:What is a fair price for a professional palm reading?
-
1Anything from $5-25 is considered reasonable for a pro palm reading. Palm readings performed by a professional aren’t all that expensive. Most palmists offer a basic service for short 10- to 15-minute palm readings, and it shouldn’t cost more than $25 or so. You can always just walk into a fortune teller’s storefront or call them and ask what they charge to find out more![1]
- Many fortune tellers have websites where they publish their prices as well.
-
2It can cost more depending on how long you want the reading to go. People can spend hours pouring over their palm lines with a professional psychic or fortune teller. If you really are interested in a more in-depth meeting where you get to spend more time asking questions, reviewing your palm’s lines, and discussing your future, it may cost up to $100.[2]
- Fortune tellers have a bit of a reputation for upselling people on bundled services. If this isn’t something you want, don’t feel pressured to pay for additional services you don’t care for.
Question 2
Question 2 of 9:What can I expect when I get my palm read?
-
1They’ll start by looking at your palm and asking questions. The palmist will sit down with you and ask to examine your hands. They may turn your hands over multiple times, and run their finders along parts of your palms. Then, they’ll start asking questions. It should start off innocuous and then move into something a little more personal.[3]
- Palmists will usually preface a reading with something like, “What are you interested in knowing?” so that they can focus their reading on something specific. If you don’t have anything you’re really interested in, you can just say, “I want to know about my future.”[4]
- Common questions include things like, “Are you in a relationship?” “Do you have a sibling with a name that starts with a J?” and, “Have you been stressed about work lately?”
- None of the personal questions are going to be invasive, so don’t worry about anything too private coming up.
-
2They’ll use your answers and your hands to make predictions. Based on your answers and the characteristics of your palms, the palmist may make certain determinations about your future.[5] It could be the near-future, or really far away. They’ll also give you the opportunity to ask follow-up or clarifying questions as well, so don’t be shy about wanting to know more![6]
- Some fortune tellers will even offer advice about how to handle a potential issue in the future, or avoid making a big mistake.
Question 3
Question 3 of 9:How does palm reading work?
-
1You analyze the features of your palm to tell your past and future. The premise is that your future, personality, experience—basically all the things that make you, you—are demonstrated by the characteristics of your hands. A trained palmist will know how to interpret those characteristics! Keep in mind that most of this involves a lot of interpretation, so you may have different results from palmist to palmist.[7]
-
2The main component involves an examination of your main lines. There’s a ton that goes into reading palms, but one of the key components is analyzing the primary lines of the palm. If a line is disjointed, broken, or damaged, it may indicate some trauma in your past, or obstacles in the future in that arena of your life. A clean, long line indicates good fortune in the future in a given category.[8] Here are your lines:
- Life line (curved line closest to your thumb) – This line indicates your overall well-being and demonstrates the potential for major life changes.
- Fate line (vertical line in the middle of your palm) – The fate line determines how much control you have over your circumstances.
- Heart line (horizontal line, intersects the fate line at the top) – This line represents your emotional stability, romantic perspectives, and cardiovascular health.
- Head line (horizontal line, intersects the fate line near the bottom) – The head line indicates your learning style, intellect, and desire to learn.
Question 4
Question 4 of 9:Is a cheaper palm reading worth it?
-
1They can absolutely be worth it! Nobody can tell the future for certain to begin with, and many palm reading customers go to fortune tellers for ideas, guidance, or insight—not to figure out what happens in the future. For some people, it’s just fun! If you look at it that way, a cheaper palm reading can be just as productive and interesting as an expensive one![9]
- Think about it like therapy. Is a cheaper therapist going to give actively bad or inaccurate advice? Absolutely not! It’s the same thing with palm readings. Besides, if they say something that doesn’t resonate, you can always brush it off.
Question 5
Question 5 of 9:How do I know if I’m being overcharged?
-
1If they want more than $25 for a basic reading, it’s not worth it. Some palm readers will try and charge up to $800 for a reading. This is unlikely to be worth it—especially if you’ve never worked with a specific palmist before and you don’t know whether you like them or not. A basic palm reading shouldn’t run more than $25 or so. Start there, and work your way up if you want to once you understand what you’re getting into.[10]
- If you like a palmist after getting a basic reading, you can always upgrade to one of their other services.
- You are not buying a car here. Your experience (and results) will not automatically be better if you pay more for the palm reading.
Question 6
Question 6 of 9:How can I get my palm read for free?
-
1Seek out someone practicing their skills as a palmist. A lot of people out there are interested in learning to read palms, but they need practice to hone their skills! Ask your friends if anyone is in the process of learning to read palms. Beyond that, you can always poke around social media and ask if any neighbors in local neighborhood groups know how to read palms. Every beginner needs practice, and they don’t charge when they’re learning![11]
Question 7
Question 7 of 9:Is it cheaper to get my palm read online?
-
1Not necessarily, although it can be if you keep it short. Online palm reading sites are convenient. You connect with a palmist digitally, show them photos of your hands, and they tell you what they can see. Unfortunately, they usually charge by the minute. This means that if you get into a good conversation and you’re starting to gleam good insights, you may end up paying a lot.[12]
- On the low end, expect to spend $1.99 a minute. That means a 10-minute reading would run $20. You’ll probably get a better price from your local palmist.
- Most of these sites offer the first 3-5 minutes for free. Conveniently for them, that’s probably how long it would take them to quietly study your palm lines.
Question 8
Question 8 of 9:Is there any free palm reading app?
-
1Yes, there are plenty of free palm reading apps out there. If you’re just looking to have some fun and get some predictions for your future, a free app is a great way to go. Some of them will walk you through how you can read your own palms, while others will have you take a photo of your hand and analyze the lines. Others will connect you with a real life palmist for a video chat. There are a ton of options out there![13]
- Some of these apps have paid features. If you’re looking for a 100% free option, True Palmistry is a pretty popular choice.
- You can also try Palm Reading Personality Test, PalmistryHD, Astro Guru, or Astroyogi Astrologer. Many of these apps have paywall features, but you should be able to access the palm reading function for free on some of them.[14]
- Most of the paid apps offer free trials. You can always download an app, use the free trial, and then delete it!
Question 9
Question 9 of 9:Which palm is better for reading?
-
1Most palmistry enthusiasts say it depends on your gender. According to the theory, a man’s left hand is what they’re born with (or their potential), while the right hand is what they’ve done in life (or their accomplishments). For women, it’s the opposite. You can use this metric to choose a hand if you’re looking for specific information.[15]
- Most palm readings involve both hands, so you probably don’t need to choose a specific hand if you’re paying a palmist.[16]
-
2When in doubt, go with your dominant hand. For both genders, the dominant hand determines the future, while the nondominant hand is the past. If you’re interested in your future (which is why most people see a palmist), just have your dominant hand read.[17]
