It depends. High-sugar fruits can cause diabetes in some hamster breeds. If you have a Syrian hamster or Roborovski dwarf hamster, you don't have to worry about diabetes. Winter Whites can sometimes be prone to diabetes, and Russian, Campbell, and Chinese dwarf hamsters are especially susceptible to diabetes and should never be given high-sugar fruits. However, just because a fruit is sweet doesn't mean it has a lot of sugar. You should always check the sugar content online before feeding your hamster if it has or is at risk for diabetes.

Just cheddar cheese and normal grapes will be fine. Do NOT overfeed them these foods though as they are meant for treats only. A small piece of cheese and half a grape once or twice a week is plenty.

That would be very dangerous and stressful for the hamster. The hamster could fall/jump out, even if you put a blanket over the basket. Not to mention, the hamster might have a heart attack or something from fear and/or stress.

Hand-feeding may help to gain its trust. Go slow and try to hand-feed it a treat once or twice a day. If it gets to the point where it's taking the food right out of your hand, then try petting it, and once it's okay with that, then try picking it up. All of this can take months, so be patient.
