Community Q&A
-
QuestionWhat can hamsters not eat?
Community AnswerThey cannot eat anything salty or with too much sugar, but they are fine with a bit of fruit or vegetables in small quantities (along with their usual food mix). -
QuestionCan hamsters have really sweet fruits?
Community AnswerIt depends. High-sugar fruits can cause diabetes in some hamster breeds. If you have a Syrian hamster or Roborovski dwarf hamster, you don't have to worry about diabetes. Winter Whites can sometimes be prone to diabetes, and Russian, Campbell, and Chinese dwarf hamsters are especially susceptible to diabetes and should never be given high-sugar fruits. However, just because a fruit is sweet doesn't mean it has a lot of sugar. You should always check the sugar content online before feeding your hamster if it has or is at risk for diabetes. -
QuestionWhat type of cheese and grapes are good for them?
Sophie WalfordCommunity AnswerJust cheddar cheese and normal grapes will be fine. Do NOT overfeed them these foods though as they are meant for treats only. A small piece of cheese and half a grape once or twice a week is plenty. -
QuestionCan hamsters eat any cheese?
Community AnswerOnly very small amounts, as excessive amounts will give them digestive issues. -
QuestionCan it eat pasta?
Community AnswerAbsolutely, and they love it, but like all treats, this should only be given to them once in a while. -
QuestionCan I put my hamster in a bike basket with me and put treats in and take it on rides?
Community AnswerThat would be very dangerous and stressful for the hamster. The hamster could fall/jump out, even if you put a blanket over the basket. Not to mention, the hamster might have a heart attack or something from fear and/or stress. -
QuestionMy hamster is too scared of me, and it's not a newborn. What do I do?
Community AnswerHand-feeding may help to gain its trust. Go slow and try to hand-feed it a treat once or twice a day. If it gets to the point where it's taking the food right out of your hand, then try petting it, and once it's okay with that, then try picking it up. All of this can take months, so be patient.
