Do your siblings wander through your room, stealing or viewing your personal items? This essay focuses solely on how to prevent such situations.
Steps
-
1Sit down and have a talk. Kindly ask them why they are touching your things and nicely ask them if they could stop.
- If your sibling is young, they might not understand this. Ask your guardian to talk to them about privacy and personal items.
- Set boundaries and tell them when they can come in, and when they can't come into your room, along with what they can play with. Keeping a box with items they can play with in your room helps.
-
2Don't yell, criticize, get violent, or be aggressive. Don't scream about how angry you are with them. Calmly tell them how you feel when the touch/take your things without asking.
- You don't want to say anything that will make them seem like the 'bad guy'.
- Don't make them think they're in trouble. Avoid being condescending and cruel.
- Arguing with them will only make the matter worse and fuel their anger. Act cool and relax.

3Passive-aggressive. You steal something of theirs and hide it every time they take your things. You demand that someone cease stealing your belongings without asking whether they demand it back. Carry on in this manner until they alter their ways.
-
4Put your items in a locked chest. Put your important items such as a diary in a locked chest under your bed or in your closet.
- Keep the key in a safe or under your mattress.
- Don’t hide the key anywhere it could be accidentally washed with the laundry, like in a pillow case or pockets in pants.
-
5If they won't listen to you, tell your guardian or parent(s). Your sibling will likely get into trouble - and definitely won't be taking your things anytime soon!
- Don't tell the adult, "Tim keeps taking my things! He is so annoying!", instead, act rationally and say "Tim won't stop taking my things without permission. I've told him to stop a few times, but he won't. Can you talk to him?"
-
6Hide your valued possessions. Keeping your valuable items out of reach of your siblings is essential to stop them from touching your stuff.
- They might search your room when you're gone, but if it's hidden well-enough, they won't be able to find anything, will get discouraged, and leave.
