Muslin fabric has become a popular choice for photography backdrops nowadays because of its texture, ease of dying and weight. Since it is a heavy-weight fabric, it offers a textured background to the photograph. The main problem with this fabric is that it gets wrinkled very easily during storage, transportation, or shipping. Though a few wrinkles are good to give an artistic effect to the photos, but you obviously do not want to have large creases in the background. So, read the points below to learn how you can get wrinkles out of muslin backdrops.

Method 1
Method 1 of 5:
Steaming the backdrop

If you do not have few days before shooting, you can use this method to remove wrinkles out of muslin backdrops quickly.

  1. 1
Steam the backdrops with the help of a hand-held steamer. The combination of heat and water will help to smooth out the surface of the backdrops.[1]
  2. 2
Continue steaming until the wrinkles disappear. Depending upon the length of the fabric, the steamer will complete its task in 15 to 20 minutes.

Method 2
Method 2 of 5:
Spritzing the backdrop

This method will take several days but it's like using steam, only much slower.

  1. 1
Hang the backdrop up. Clamp it tight to stretch it.
  2. 2
Using a simple spray bottle filled with water, spritz the backdrop lightly from both sides.[2]
  3. 3
As the backdrop dries, it will stretch and tighten, and the wrinkles will drop out.

Method 3
Method 3 of 5:
Washing a stained backdrop

  1. 1
Wash and dry the backdrops. Use a washing machine on a cool setting so that the backdrops do not tear away.[3]
  2. 2
Dry. For drying the backdrops, do not put it in the washing machine dryer. Hang it up and let it dry in a natural way.
    • Do not over-dry the cloth, as this may result in shiny spots appearing on the cloth.

Method 5
Method 5 of 5:
Storing the backdrop

  1. 1
Roll up all backdrops after use. After the shooting is over, roll up the backdrops on a plastic tube.[5]
    • Do not fold the backdrops. Folding the backdrops for a longer time will result in wrinkles.
  2. 2
If you have more than one backdrop, buy extra support poles to store them on. Or to save money, buy rigid PVC plumbing pipe (about $10 for a 10-ft section) and roll the backdrop up tightly and carefully. Be careful not to introduce new wrinkles when you roll it.
  3. 3
Secure the rolled up backdrop with masking tape, Velcro strips or with long shoelaces.
  4. 4
Store horizontally in a dry, clean location. Or, install shelf brackets on the wall to keep them.

Warnings

  • Don’t iron the muslin backdrops. The heat generated from the iron may create shiny spots on the surface of the backdrops which will totally ruin the backdrops.
