Rotom is a hard to obtain Pokémon. Starting in Pokémon Platinum Version, it can switch between various forms, which can give it a few extra moves it can use.
Steps
-
1Get the National Dex and go to Old Chateau.
-
2Go up the stairs and into the top middle room.
-
3Enter the first room on the left; there's a TV inside.
-
4If it is after 8.00 pm press "A" in front of the TV. The game will ask if you want to thump it: say yes. You will get into battle.
-
5Battle and try to catch Rotom. Be careful not to let it faint!

QuestionWhat if a wild Rotom accidentally faints? Could I try again?
Community AnswerNope. Sorry, but most one-time Pokemon (such as Rotom, Heatran, and the Lake Guardians) will never show back up again if you accidentally knock them out. Newer games do address this, but as Diamond is an older game, your best bet is to either get a Rotom through a trade or reset your game entirely. -
QuestionIs it possible to get a shiny Rotom?
ThesmartpotatoCommunity AnswerYes. If you have a lot of time to spare and have quick hands, considering you'll have to do a lot of trying and reseting before catching one. -
QuestionDo I need a National Pokedex to get Rotom in Diamond version?
Community AnswerYes. Until you receive the National Pokedex, you will not be able to encounter Rotom. This holds true for Pearl as well, but not for Platinum, where you can battle Rotom as soon as you can reach it (assuming it is night). -
QuestionI'm playing at 8:07. Rotom won't come out! I've restarted twice and exited and entered different rooms (and explored the entire place) several times. What now?
ThesmartpotatoCommunity AnswerMaybe you're missing the National Pokedex, which, as stated in the article, is needed before catching Rotom. -
QuestionWill Rotom come back?
Community AnswerNo. Rotom is classified as a one-time Pokemon, and will never come back regardless of whether you knock it out or capture it. If you want one but have defeated it previously, your best bet is to either get one in a trade or reset your game. -
QuestionHow do I catch Red Gyarados?
Community AnswerThe red (technically speaking, shiny) Gyarados is unobtainable in Pokemon Diamond; rather, its inclusion in the beginning sequence is a reference to Gold and Silver as well as Heartgold and Soulsilver, all of which have one red Gyarados available for capture in the Lake of Rage. -
QuestionHow do I get a national dex in Pokemon Diamond without completing the Sinnoh dex?
Community AnswerSee every Pokemon in the regional dex; you can do this in one game without the now-defunct GTS or any trading.
