The Metal Cap is a power-up in Super Mario 64 that allows Mario to turn metal, and thus be able to obtain Power Stars that were unable to be obtained before. While the process for obtaining Metal Mario may seem difficult, this wikiHow will provide you with some advice.
Steps
-
1Select a file where you know you have defeated Bowser in the first Bowser level. You can also simply click on the file with the most stars and reach this point in the game if you haven't already defeated Bowser.
- If you have not already defeated Bowser in the first Bowser level (Bowser in the Dark World), obtain at least eight stars from around the first floor of the castle and then head up the center, largest staircase and to the left. You should notice a door with a large Power Star and no number on it. This is the door you want to enter. You will eventually fall through a trap door, and enter the level. Traverse through it, and enter the green warp pipe at the end of the level, where you will need to defeat Bowser by grabbing his tail, swinging him around and throwing him into spikes lining the side of the battlefield.
-
2Enter the basement. To do this, from the center of the castle's first floor, head either to the left or right, where you should notice a wooden door without a star or number on it. Either of these doors is the one you will want to enter. Once you've entered this door, head down the relatively large flight of stairs, where you should notice a door with a keyhole. A brief animation will play if this door has not already been unlocked, and Mario should enter it.Advertisement
-
3Go through the next wooden door with no star symbol or number on it. This is found at the end of the hallway you should notice upon entering the basement.
-
4Notice Lethal Lava Land, a painting with fire. Once you see this, head to the right.
-
5Go through the door with a Star on it but with no number. This is located on top of the platform you should notice to the right of the Lethal Lava Land painting. Once you enter this door, you should notice a pool of metallic liquid that you'll want to jump in.
-
6Click on any random Power Star. You should be able to obtain the Metal Cap regardless of which Power Star you select.
-
7Go to the left upon entering the course.
-
8Jump or backflip over the big hole, and enter the door that is on the other side.
-
9Walk to the end of this room, to the pathway where the Watch for Rolling Rocks star can be obtained.
- Be careful, since there is a large black hole on the route to this pathway. If you fall in, you will lose a life and need to re-enter the level.
-
10Avoid the rocks and make your way through the metal door to the right at the end of the path. You will then see an elevator. Step on it and wait until it’s at the bottom. You will eventually notice an underground lake.
-
11Jump on the sea monster (Dorrie) and it will make its way to the double metal door.
- Patience is required, since it may take a while for Dorrie to arrive there.
-
12Jump off of Dorrie and onto the red platform leading to the double metal door. Be careful, as you may end up falling into the water and needing to jump back on Dorrie and try again.
-
13Jump in the next pool of liquid. This should be fairly noticeable once you walk a little further in to the room.
-
14Ground pound or jump on the green switch. This should be located in the river on a relatively tall platform.Advertisement

Community AnswerThe green caps are what you need to pick up in a level in order to become metal Mario. They are in green”!” boxes. -
QuestionCan you beat super Mario 64 without using the metal cap?
Community AnswerNo. Some stars are in a jet stream which requires metal Mario. If you want to just beat the third Bowser, then yes.
Warnings
- Avoid climbing into the waterfall at the end of the river. Although you shouldn't lose a life, this will send you outside the castle and you'll need to go to Hazy Maze Cave again. Thanks!
