Keep a 3-4 second distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. The most likely place for you to get in an accident is right in front of you. Choose a fixed object like a traffic sign, wait for the vehicle in front of you to pass it, and then count how long it takes for you to pass it. Use this rule to help maintain enough distance so you can safely stop and avoid accidents.[4]
    • Increase your following distance an extra second conditions such as rain and fog, as well as when you’re driving at night or following a large truck.

Put your phone away.

What do I do if I'm running out of gas in the middle of the street?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Pull over immediately to the side of the road or wherever it is possible/safe to do so. Even if there is no gas in the car, you should be able to put it in neutral and drift to the side. Then call AAA or a friend/family member and ask them if they can bring you gas. You can avoid having this happen by not waiting until the last minute to refill your tank.

    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Pull over if it is safe to do so and let the emergency vehicle pass. If it is not safe to pull over, it may be okay to just stop and allow cars elsewhere in the lanes to move out of the way. At the very least, slow down. Stay alert and maneuver out of the way as best you can.
