Mushroom coffee, as the name suggests, is a natural hybrid of coffee and dried mushrooms, and is enjoyed as an instant beverage. Unlike regular coffee, this drink only has 40 mg of caffeine, which prevents you from feeling on edge or jittery. There isn’t a lot of research out about mushroom coffee, though some coffee blends use ingredients like chaga mushrooms, which were once used to treat infections and certain GI issues.[1] Experiment with this new drink by adding it to your daily routine!

- 1 tbsp (7.5 g) of cacao powder
- 1 US tbsp (15 mL) of coconut oil
Pumpkin Spice Mushroom Coffee

- 2 US tbsp (30 mL) of pumpkin purée
Basic Sweetened Mushroom Coffee

- 3 US tbsp (44 mL) of hot water

- 1 tsp (4.9 mL) of honey
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 3:Making a Cup of Mushroom Coffee
-
1Pour a packet or spoonful of mushroom coffee into a mug. Check your package of mushroom coffee to see if it comes in a tin or box. Some brands package individual servings of mushroom coffee, while others have multiple servings in a single container. Empty a single package into your mug, or spoon out 1 tbsp (5 g) of powder instead.[2]
- You can purchase mushroom coffee online, or find it in specialty stores. It tends to be more expensive than regular coffee beans, but it’s cheaper than buying coffee from a coffee shop.
- Some mushroom coffee brands may recommend using 3 tbsp (15 g) of coffee instead of just 1. Double-check the label to be sure![3]
-
2Fill the mug with hot water. Place a kettle of water on your stovetop and wait for it to reach a boil. Pour about 8 fl oz (240 mL) of water into your mug, which will help give your beverage a rich flavor.[4]
- Some prefer to use just hot water, while others prefer to use a combination of hot water and plant-based milk. Double-check your coffee’s packaging to see what the recommended mixtures are.

3Stir the powder into the water until it’s fully dissolved. Grab a spoon and swirl the powder into the water for several seconds. Wait until a dark, coffee-like mixture forms in your mug. At this point, you’re ready to enjoy your mushroom coffee![5]
- Despite the name, mushroom coffee doesn’t taste like actual mushrooms. In fact, it tastes very similar to regular coffee![6]

Method 2
Method 2 of 3:Adding Mushroom Coffee to Your Routine
-
1Switch out regular coffee for mushroom coffee. Think about how often you drink regular coffee, and look for opportunities to make the switch to a less caffeinated alternative. Before a brewing a cup or pot of traditional coffee, try mixing up a cup with some powder instead.[7]
- For instance, if you usually drink coffee when you first wake up, try using mushroom coffee in your morning routine instead.
-
2Enjoy up to 8 cups of mushroom coffee each day. While mushroom coffee isn’t as caffeinated as regular coffee, try to drink it in moderation.[8] Keep in mind that a single serving of mushroom coffee contains around 50 mg of caffeine. The average adult can safely enjoy up to 400 mg of caffeine each day, which equals around 8 cups of mushroom coffee.[9]
- Some other foods or drinks you consume may have caffeine, which may affect how much mushroom coffee you can safely drink in 1 day.
- If you consume too much caffeine, you may experience mood changes, along with an increased pulse and muscle tremors.
-
3Talk to your doctor if you take a lot of medications. Write down a list of all the medications you’re currently taking. While mushroom coffee is harmless, it may interact negatively with some of your medications. As an extra precaution, call or schedule an appointment with a doctor to get confirmation.[10]
- On its own, mushroom powder is considered a dietary supplement.[11]

Method 3
Method 3 of 3:Trying Sweet Variations
-
1Switch out real sugar with natural alternatives. Check your local grocery store or specialty food shop for other sweet substances you can use to dress up your coffee. Look for coconut sugar, stevia extract, maple syrup, or blended dates as replacements for sugar in your cup of mushroom coffee.[12]
- Opt for pure maple syrup instead of breakfast syrups.
- You only need to blend 1-2 dates to create a sweetener for your coffee.
-
2Pour natural plant milks into your mushroom coffee. Shop for popular types of plant milk, like oat or almond milk. You can also play around with various kinds of seed or nut milk, depending on what’s available in your local grocery store.[13]
- Many people prefer to mix plant milk instead of dairy milk with their coffee.
-
3Stir in cacao powder to add a touch of mocha. Prepare a traditional cup of mushroom coffee with your preferred powder and 6 fl oz (180 mL) of plant milk. Scoop about 1 tbsp (7.5 g) of cacao powder and stir into your drink, along with 1 US tbsp (15 mL) of coconut oil. Mix all of these ingredients together to make a flavorful, alternative take on a cup of mocha coffee.[14]
- You can also use 3-4 drops of stevia sweetener if your coffee isn’t sweet enough.
-
4Create an alternative pumpkin spice latte with mushroom coffee. Pour 6 fl oz (180 mL) of water into your mug, along with 2 US tbsp (30 mL) of coconut milk, 8 drops of stevia sweetener, 2 US tbsp (30 mL) of pumpkin purée, and 1 tsp (1.9 g) of pumpkin pie spice. Stir all of these ingredients together to enjoy a new take on a classic autumn drink.[15]
- For a creamier drink, switch out almond milk for the hot water.
-
5Mix oat milk, coconut oil, and honey for a sweet take on mushroom coffee. Pour a packet or 1 tbsp (5 g) of mushroom powder into a mug, then mix in 1 US tbsp (15 mL) of hot water. Make the drink creamier by stirring in 1 c (240 mL) of steamed oat milk, along with 1 US tbsp (15 mL) of coconut oil and 1 tsp (4.9 mL) of honey.[16]Advertisement
