First birthdays are a big deal—and while your baby boy probably won’t remember it, you certainly will! Picking out decorations and cake toppers is half the fun, but it can be tough to decide on a theme when your baby is that young. We’ve compiled a list of decorations you can choose from to make sure your baby has the best first birthday he could possibly have.
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 13:Keep it classic with a blue color scheme.
-
1You can’t go wrong with blue decorations for a boy. If the birthday boy isn’t old enough to pick a favorite color, stick with blue balloons, plates, napkins, and streamers. It’s an easy way to deck out your home without a lot of planning![1]
- You don’t have to stick with pale baby blue. Try mixing and matching with navy blue, sky blue, or turquoise blue.
- Or, go with a blue theme, like oceans, sea animals, or sky birds.
Method 2
Method 2 of 13:Get colorful with rainbows.
-
1Babies love bright colors. If you aren’t sure what the birthday boy’s favorite color is, go all out by decorating in the colors of the rainbow. The cake, napkins, plates, and décor can all follow the color scheme for an easy way to make the party cohesive.[2]
- If super bright colors aren’t really your style, try decorating in a pastel rainbow instead.
- Try buying balloons in the shape of a rainbow, or hanging up streamers in a rainbow color scheme.
Method 3
Method 3 of 13:Go big with balloons.
-
1Every baby loves staring at a floating balloon! Keep your decorations simple by filling your home or outdoor area with balloons of various shapes and sizes. You could even get a few balloon animals to share with party guests as they leave.[3]
- Pick out some balloons in the shape of a 1 for a fun way to celebrate his big day.
- Make all your balloons look cohesive by picking out a fun color palette, like rainbow or shades of blue.
- Match your balloons with your plates and napkins for an easy way to tie in all your decorations.
Method 4
Method 4 of 13:Try dinosaurs to indulge his inner T-rex.
-
1Your baby might have an affinity for dinosaurs. Try sending out invitations with a stegosaurus on them and putting up dinosaur-shaped balloons. All your baby’s pals will have fun pointing out the dinosaur shapes and munching on dinosaur cupcakes![4]
- If there are any older kids in the group, try playing pin the tail on the dinosaur or coloring in pictures of a T-rex.
- Pick out decorations that are brown, green, and blue to stick with your theme.
Method 5
Method 5 of 13:Go for a monster truck or car theme.
-
1Even babies like to play with toy cars. If the baby boy in your life can’t get enough of his Hot Wheels, try adding a truck-shaped banner to the wall and surrounding the area in truck-shaped balloons. Top it off with a cake shaped like a truck and some toy trucks for all the guests to play with.[5]
- Or, make the cake simpler by frosting a regular circle cake and putting a few brand new toy trucks on top of it.
- You could also make the theme more specific by decorating with construction vehicles or fire trucks.
- Stick with a red or brown color scheme to really make your party look cohesive.
Method 6
Method 6 of 13:Cut out characters from his favorite book.
-
1He might recognize them if you point them out. Blow up photocopies from the printed pages or buy napkins and plates with the characters on them. Use the characters as cake toppers to really tie the whole party together.[6]
- If books aren’t really your thing, TV shows and movies work great too!
- Fun characters include Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Thomas the Train.
- You could also get party hats with the characters on them so all the other little kids can have fun dressing up.
Method 7
Method 7 of 13:Head to the moon with an outer space theme.
-
1Encourage his science-y side from a young age. Get balloons shaped like stars, moons, and planets, then put up sparkly banners behind them. Bonus points if you can find a rocket ship balloon![7]
- Try finding a banner that says “To The Moon” to really tie the whole thing together.
- Pick out plates, napkins, and balloons in black and silver to look like stars in outer space.
- Hang up streamers from the ceiling to look like shooting stars.
Method 8
Method 8 of 13:Celebrate sports with a football motif.
-
1If you like sports, your baby might too! Cut brownies in the shape of a football and give out plates and napkins with players on them. Throw around miniature footballs for the older kids to play with while the adults chat.[8]
- Buy a tablecloth that looks like a football field to set up the snack table.
- Get some plastic cups that look like footballs for a fun way to serve drinks.
- If football isn’t your thing, any sport will do. Soccer, basketball, baseball, and rugby are all great options.
Method 9
Method 9 of 13:Try a jungle theme if he loves animals.
-
1You might already be able to tell if he’s an animal lover. Gather all of his favorite stuffed animals, print out some pictures of jungle critters, and hang balloons that are green, brown, and white. Add some large palm leaves on the wall and hand out cupcakes with lions or tigers on them.[9]
- Your goody bags can be jungle themed, too! Throw in some animal-shaped erasers, pencils, and candy.
- Try handing out headbands with animal ears on them for all the kids (and adults!) to wear.
- Or, buy a few safari hats and hand them out as party favors.
Method 10
Method 10 of 13:Go futuristic with a robot theme.
-
1Gears and gadgets will decorate your home for his birthday. Get some cardboard cutouts of robots and hang them up on the walls. Buy a banner that says “happy birthday” spelled out with gears to stick with the robotic theme. A robot-shaped cake is easy to make: stack a square cake on top of a rectangle cake, then decorate them like a robot’s head and body.[10]
- If there are any older kids at the party, end the day with a robot dance contest!
Method 11
Method 11 of 13:Get spooky with a mad scientist theme.
-
1If his birthday is around Halloween, you might already have the costume. Fill up a punch bowl with bright pink or blue punch, then top it with dry ice for a fun special effect. Serve drinks in beakers and hand out candy in petri dishes to have fun with science.[11]
- If he’ll manage it, you could even dress him up in a lab coat and a crazy mad scientist wig.
- Set up a chalkboard for older kids to write “equations” on.
- Serve small snacks in test tubes.
Method 12
Method 12 of 13:Try a pun with a “bee-day.”
-
1Your guests will be buzzing when they show up to this party. Wish the birthday boy a “Happy bee-day” with a bee-themed cake, decorations, and party favors. Dress up the birthday boy in a yellow and black outfit to go all out with the theme.[12]
- You could also serve honey-flavored treats to your guests.
- Hang up a piñata shaped like a bee for a fun way to drop candy for the kids.
- Decorate your home with a few honeycomb shaped shelves to hold all your snacks and party favors.
Method 13
Method 13 of 13:Walk down memory lane with a year of firsts.
-
1Show your guests how far your baby has come in 1 year. Print out photos of all of his firsts: first smile, first bath, first solid food, and first big trip. Frame them and spread them around the party for your guests to admire while they mingle.[13]
- You could also combine all the photos in one large frame for a fun photo collage.
