This wikiHow teaches you how to use the LEN function in an Excel spreadsheet in order to count the number of total characters in a cell or cell range, using an iPhone or iPad.

Steps

  1. 1
Open the Excel app on your iPhone or iPad. The Excel icon looks like a white spreadsheet document in a green box. You can find it on your home screen.
  2. 2
Tap the Recent tab. This button looks like a clock icon on a navigation bar at the bottom of your screen. It will open a list of all the spreadsheet files you've recently viewed or edited.
    • Alternatively, you can tap Shared to see your shared spreadsheets, or Open to see all your saved files.

  3. 3
Tap the file you want to edit. Find the spreadsheet file you want to edit on the list, and open it.
  4. 4
Double-tap an empty cell in the spreadsheet. This will allow you to edit the contents of the selected cell.
    • Alternatively, you can long-press on an empty cell, and tap Edit on the pop-up menu.
  5. 5
Type =LEN(cell) into the empty cell. This formula will allow you to count the length of the string in a cell, and return the total number of characters in the count.
  6. 6
Replace cell with the cell number you want to count. Each cell is numbered with a row number and a column letter. Find the number of the cell you want to count, and insert it into your formula.
    • For example, if you want to count cell A5, your formula should look like =LEN(A5).
  7. 7
Count multiple cells by separating each cell number with a comma. If you want to count multiple cells at once, separate each cell number with a comma in your formula.
    • For example, in order to count cells A5 and B7, type =LEN(A5,B7).
  8. 8
Count a range of cells by separating the first and last cells with a colon. If you want to count all the characters in a range of cells, enter the first and last cells of the cell range into the formula, and separate them with a colon.
    • For example, if you want to count all the cells between A5 and B7, type =LEN(A5:B7).
  9. 9
Tap the green checkmark icon. This button is in the upper-right corner of your screen. It will apply your formula to the specified cells, and return the total number of characters.
