Collecting Origami is an unusual hobby in that Origami is not generally available for sale. Therefore, collecting origami usually consists of buying books about Origami and folding the designs yourself.

Here are a few tips for the individual interested on amassing an Origami Collection.

Steps

  1. 1
Purchase books with simple, easy to follow instructions. Pay no attention to the reviews... only ask yourself "Could I make this?" and "Does this make sense to me?"
  2. 2
Use squares of plain copy paper to fold with on your first try. Origami paper is expensive, thinner and easier to tear... therefore less forgiving of mistakes.

  3. 3
Set aside a shelf for the "stand up" models and an area of your ceiling for "hanging" models.
  4. 4
Hang models by sewing a thread through the design and tacking the thread to the ceiling. (caution: if you rent your home, you may want to use poster putty or tape for this)
  5. 5
Continue to make whatever origami models you most admire... progressing from simple, basic models to the more complex ones.
  6. 6
Grow your collection in this manner, making duplicate models of any model you think others may appreciate.
  7. 7
Give or trade your duplicate models to and with other collectors.

Warnings

  • Keep your paper out of direct sunlight. White paper turns yellow after a while and the ends start curling up.
  • Keep your origami in a dry place. If water gets onto the paper, it could be ruined.
  • Keep your completed origami in a cabinet. If you display it, it could get dusty and it will be hard to clean
