Ever wondered how people manage to bake those expensive engagement rings into those tiny little desserts that you see all the time in the movies? The ever popular King Cakes of Mardi Gras are baked this way, where the coin that decides the next king of Mardi Gras is baked into one of the little cakes. However, if not done right, you could potentially make your loved one sick, or ruin the ring or other item you're putting into the food.
Steps
Method 1
Method 1 of 2:Inserting the Ring While Baking
-
1Heat up the oven to the required temperature for baking your cake
-
2Prepare your item by wrapping it into the tin foil. Make sure there are no openings and wrap it up tight. Also make sure that you do not over wrap your item as it will sink.
-
3Pour the batter into your desired pan for your cake.
-
4Place the pan into the pre-heated oven without the item inside it.
-
5Wait until the batter has become firm on the outside and then mushy on the inside to place your item inside the cake and then resume cooking. NOTE: this may cause you to open the already cooked top of the cake. If this happens place a thin layer of batter over the top and resume cooking.
-
6Keep an eye on the cake to make sure it doesn't burn if you placed more batter on top.
-
7Test and make sure the cake is completely cooked. Use a toothpick, not a fork. Forks have the tendency to push the item further down and leave gaping holes in the top of your cake.
-
8Once your cake has cooled, frost it, and enjoy!
Method 2
Method 2 of 2:Inserting the Ring After Baking
-
1Bake your cake as directed.
-
2Let it cool for at least 3 hours or more.
-
3Simply cut a hole into the top of the cake. It may be easier to refrigerate the cake after it has cooled so when you cut it, it will not crumble. Also be careful that you do not cut a bigger hole than needed or too deep of a hole, as this will cause the cake to fall apart.
-
4Place your item into the hole and then place the cut out piece of cake on top of the hole to see how much you need to cut off.
-
5Cut off as much cake needed to cover your item.
-
6Frost the sides of the piece of cake used to cover your item so when you go to frost the whole cake, it won't fall apart. Do Not frost the bottom of the piece of cake. It will get frosting on your item.
-
7Place the frosted piece of cake on top of the item.
-
8Refrigerate for another hour or so.
-
9Frost the whole cake and enjoy!
Warnings
- Make sure that whoever is eating the cake is safe while eating it. Many people choke on the thing you are putting into their food because they don't know it's there! If you're afraid of it happening, then you should probably read How to Do CPR on an Adult. Thanks!
- Use an item that will not release any harmful chemicals. Things that are highly Not recommended for use are: anything other than stainless steel, or not coated with Teflon, any kind of plastics, anything containing liquid, or anything that has the potential to melt that shouldn't.Thanks!
