How to Add a Key to a Key Ring

A key ring keeps keys together and often holds a key fob to help keep the whole bunch from getting lost. Springy key rings can be a bit fiddly to work with, but once on, they'll hold keys well.

Steps

Look for clasps and releases. Most key rings are like springs, but some have clasps that open directly. The rest of this article is about the spring style key rings.

Choose where you want the key. If you have several keys on the ring already, you may want to place the key in a certain place in the sequence. Push the other keys to the side and work in the space where you want the new key. Also decide which way you'd like the key to point, with relation to the key ring and the other keys.

Pull open the ring, just far enough to get the key under it. You can jam a thumb or fingernail in, or you can use a slender object, such as a paper clip or screwdriver, to spare your nails.^{[1]

Push the separated end through the hole in the key, so that the key is in between the coils. The key will hold the coils open.^{[2]
